Black light is sometimes called as Ultraviolet light; it is an electromagnetic radiation that is in ultraviolet range. Black light emits very slight visible light. Fluorescent black light bulb is used in forensics, medicine, nightclubs, banks, criminology departments, and other type of scientific fields etc. The source that is used to produce black light is referred as Wood's Lamp. Such bulbs are also used for producing artistic and decorative lightening effects.

Fluorescent bulb, lamp or tube uses electricity in order to discharge gas, which in turn stimulates mercury vapors. The mercury atoms generate ultraviolet light that is of short wave length. Mercury atoms make phosphorus to incandesce and the output is produce in the form of visible light. Fluorescent bulb converts electric energy into light energy more proficiently as compare to incandescent lamps or bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs are expensive in comparison to incandescent bulbs; as such, bulb requires a kind of control gear in order to control the flow of electric current through the bulb. Main uses of fluorescent black light bulb are suppression of microorganisms, for detection and study of those substances that have fluorescent effects, attracting insects in order to destroy them, curative for plastic resins. Fluorescent black light bulb is also used for detecting fake money and for this reason; some of the banks use such bulbs. Ultraviolet light, which is of longer wavelength, is use in tanning beds. Ordinary tanning beds use many fluorescent bulbs that emit Ultraviolet light in the form of a spectrum, which is very much similar, the sun. Today, electrical appliances are invented by the scientist in such way that they help in reducing pollution and power consumption, as people know that environment protection is also depends on the utilization of electrical appliance so they prefer to use fluorescent bulbs. UV fluorescent bulbs are energy saving bulbs that are easily available in market.

Fluorescent black light bulb comes in market in attractive shapes and sizes. The voltage and wattage required by such bulbs are very low; they require voltage up to 12 to 120 volt, from 110 to 130 volt etc.

The wattage required by fluorescent black light bulb can vary from e.g. nineteen watt, eighteen watt, fifteen watt, eleven watt, twelve watt, hundred watts etc. Such energy saving bulb are very much helpful in reducing the cost of electricity. Powerful UV light sources are harmful for the skin and eyes, so it is necessary for the people to wear protective equipment to protect themselves from different types of diseases caused by harmful radiations e.g. cancer etc.

Fluorescent black light bulb are made in the same way as normal fluorescent light bulb, but in such bulbs only one phosphor is used, and the envelope that is used, is made of clear glass. There is a coating of Ultraviolet filtering material above the glass surface. Different manufacturers use some kind of numbering system for black light e.g. UV-A, or UV-B and such tubes are also known by the name of actinic tubes. Today, it is necessary to use such energy saving equipments in order to save power and environment.
